Translation (अनुवाद)

In the sacrificial offering of knowledge or wisdom (*Jnana Yajna*), the oblation is Brahman (the ultimate reality), the clarified butter used for sacrifice is Brahman, the fire into which the offering is made is Brahman, and the offering itself is done by Brahman. Through meditation and absorption in actions dedicated to Brahman (*brahma-karma-samādhinā*), the seeker realizes that Brahman alone is the goal and everything is permeated by Brahman.

Commentary (टीका)

The essence of this śloka describes the state of *jñāna-yajña* (wisdom sacrifice), where everything involved in the act is seen as Brahman. The performer, the offerings, the fire, and the act itself are seen as inseparable from Brahman. This perspective transforms all actions into a meditative realization that everything is permeated by Brahman, leading to liberation.

  • Swami Sivananda’s commentary* elucidates that when one achieves self-realization, the distinction between the action, the instruments, and the results dissolves in the awareness of Brahman. Every facet of the action is Brahman, and through such understanding, one attains Brahman.
  • Swami Ramsukhdas’s Hindi commentary* stresses that this concept of all-encompassing Brahman is not mere imagination but a reality. The sacrifices mentioned in these slokas are primarily components of *karma yoga* and when actions are seen as acts of sacrifice, they transcend to a level where they do not bind the doer. It clarifies how food-eating is also a sacrifice when seen as Brahman.

In conclusion, the teaching emphasizes the understanding that *Brahman* alone is the ultimate reality underlining all aspects of existence, realized through deep meditation and dedication to actions without attachment.
