Commentary (टीका)

In this sloka, Bhagavan Kṛṣṇa condemns acts of hypocrisy where a person outwardly restrains the organs of action (karmendriyāṇi) while internally dwelling on sense objects (indriyārthān). The English commentary emphasizes the significance of aligning external actions with internal thoughts to achieve true yoga and self-realization. Such dissonance between action and thought categorizes an individual as a mithyācāra or hypocrite. The real restraint involves controlling the mind, not merely curbing physical actions.

Swami Ramsukhdas in the Hindi commentary elaborates that mere cessation of actions or outward control of the senses cannot be deemed as non-action, as the inward relish or thinking of sense objects continues. It emphasizes that control should stem from sincere effort to align thoughts with restrained actions to progress spiritually. The passage advises against duality in behavior and internal desires, underlining the spiritual practice in controlling not just actions (external) but desires (internal) too for genuine progress.
