Commentary (टीका)
In this verse, Śrī Bhagavān asks Arjuna how he has come under this dejection at such a critical time. The term "anāryajusṭam" indicates actions unbecoming of an honorable and wise person ('ārya'), which cannot lead one to heaven (asvargyam) and instead brings disgrace (akīrtikaram).
According to Swami Sivananda's commentary, Śrī Bhagavān questions Arjuna on the unexpected emergence of such dejection, emphasizing that such feelings do not suit him as a Kṣatriya. Swami Ramsukhdas expands further, explaining that this dejection is neither an inherent trait of Arjuna's intellect nor conducive to his well-being, urging him to rise above it. Furthermore, Swami Ramsukhdas addresses the concept of dignity among different types of people and aligns Arjuna's present state as contrary to virtue, courage, and socially reputable aspirations.
The core theme is the inability of weakness and despondency to contribute positively to one's duties and aspirations. Arjuna's dejection is seen as an impediment to righteousness, salvation (mokṣa), and fulfillment of social duty. This discourse seeks to invoke self-realization, urging a pursuit of duty aligned with righteousness, success, and honorableness.
