Translation/Explanation

Hindi

जब यज्ञ की दक्षिणाएँ वितरित की जा रही थीं, उस समय उस किशोर (नचिकेता) में श्रद्धा का उदय हुआ। उसने विचार किया।

English

When the dakṣiṇā (ritual rewards) were being distributed, at that time, faith (śraddhā) arose in that youth (kumāra, Nachiketas). He thought within himself.

Commentary

Him, that is, Nachiketas, though in the state of kumāra (youth), and not yet possessing the power of procreation, was possessed by śraddhā (faith) in the existence of a future state, induced by the desire for the good of his father. The time is specified: when the cows (dakṣiṇā) were being brought to be distributed among the ṛtvik-s and sadasya-s as rewards. Possessed of śraddhā, Nachiketas thus amanyata (thought).
