यथादर्शे तथात्मनि यथा स्वप्ने तथा पितृलोके ।
	यथाप्सु परीव ददृशे तथा गन्धर्वलोके छायातपयोरिव ब्रह्मलोके ॥ ५ ॥

yathādarśe tathātmani yathā svapne tathā pitṛloke |
	yathāpsu parīva dadṛśe tathā gandharvaloke chāyātapayoriva brahmaloke || 5 ||

Translation/Explanation

Hindi: जैसे दर्पण में (प्रतिबिंब) स्पष्ट दिखता है, वैसे ही (शुद्ध) बुद्धि में आत्मा का साक्षात्कार स्पष्ट होता है; जैसे स्वप्न में दृश्य अस्पष्ट होते हैं, वैसे ही पितृलोक में आत्मा का अनुभव अस्पष्ट होता है; जैसे जल में प्रतिबिंब धुंधला दिखाई देता है, वैसे ही गन्धर्वलोक में आत्मा का साक्षात्कार अस्पष्ट होता है; और जैसे छाया और प्रकाश में भेद स्पष्ट होता है, वैसे ही ब्रह्मलोक में आत्मा का साक्षात्कार अत्यंत स्पष्ट होता है।

English: As in a mirror (darśa), so within one’s own ātman; as in dream (svapna), so in the pitṛloka; as indistinctly seen in water (apsu), so in the gandharvaloka; as between shadow (chāyā) and light (tapas), so in the brahmaloka. The realization of ātman is clear in a pure intellect, indistinct in the pitṛloka and gandharvaloka, and supremely distinct in the brahmaloka.

Commentary

This mantra illustrates the gradations in the clarity of ātman-realization across different realms. Just as one’s image is seen distinctly in a mirror (darśa) when the surface is spotless, so is the ātman realized clearly in a pure intellect. In the pitṛloka, the experience of the ātman is as indistinct as in a dream (svapna), clouded by the enjoyment of karmic results. In the gandharvaloka, the realization is as vague as one’s reflection in water (apsu), lacking definition. Only in the brahmaloka, like the clear distinction between shadow (chāyā) and light (tapas), is the realization of the ātman supremely clear. This teaches that the opportunity for the most lucid realization of the ātman is here and now, in this world, and should be earnestly pursued.
