Commentary (टीका)

This verse elucidates the varying levels of self-identification based on one's spiritual understanding. Jaḍa, or the dull-witted, see themselves only as the physical body, while the vidvāna, or wise, perceive a connection of self with both body and soul. The mahātmā, a soul of great realization, perceives only the Brahman (the ultimate reality) as their true identity. This illustrates a gradation of understanding from materialism to spiritual enlightenment. The verse underscores the importance of viveka (discernment) and vijñāna (knowledge) in achieving self-realization and transcending limiting self-concepts.
