Commentary (टीका)
This verse delves into the essence of the self which is beyond the five *kośas* or sheaths—annamaya, prāṇamaya, manomaya, vijñānamaya, and ānandamaya. These sheaths cover the true self, which is described here as śuddha, pure and uncontaminated by any material impurity. The self is further characterized as being of singular essence or eka-rasa, embodying eternal bliss, or ānanda. This pure consciousness, which is the pratyag-rūpa, the innermost reality, is self-luminous, described as svayam-jyoti, needing no external source to illuminate it. Such a description aligns with the Vedantic teaching that the ultimate reality or Brahman is within and is self-revealing, unconditioned by external entities. This sloka invites the seeker to recognize and re-identify with this pure, blissful, self-luminous inner self, transcending all superficial layers or sheaths.
