Commentary (टीका)
This verse delineates the nature of the *sūkṣma-śarīra* or subtle body, referred to as the *liṅga*. Unlike the gross body, this subtle body is composed of unmanifest elements (*apañcīkṛta*), which are subtler than the manifest elements. It is the vehicle of individual consciousness, infused with *vāsanas* or latent impressions that are the results of past actions and desires. The *sūkṣma-śarīra* experiences the consequences of karma, acting as the container for the soul's experiences across lifetimes.
Crucially, this subtle body imposes an *upādhi* or limiting adjunct on the *ātman* (self), contributing to the illusory individuality and separation from the universal consciousness. This limitation is a consequence of *ajñāna* or ignorance, which is beginningless (*anādi*), forming the fundamental misunderstanding that reinforces samsāra, the cycle of birth and rebirth. Understanding and transcending this subtle body through wisdom and realization leads to liberation or *mokṣa*. The sloka invites the seeker to grasp these truths, promising a vision beyond *māyā*. The imagery and terminologies emphasize that self-realization involves penetrating through the layers of illusion to the true essence of being.
