Translation/Explanation
Hindi: बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को चाहिए कि वह वाणी को मन में, मन को बुद्धि में, बुद्धि को महत् आत्मा में और महत् आत्मा को शांत आत्मा में लीन कर दे।
English: Let the prājñaḥ (intelligent one) withdraw vāk (speech) into manas (mind), that (mind) into jñāna (intellect), jñāna (intellect) into the mahat ātman (great Self), and that mahat ātman into the śānta ātman (peaceful Self).
Commentary
The mantra delineates the process of internalization and withdrawal as a means to realize the ultimate Self. The term yacchet (let one restrain/withdraw) is used repeatedly to indicate the progressive absorption of the outer faculties into subtler principles. The prājñaḥ (discerning one) is advised to first withdraw vāk (speech, representative of all senses) into manas (mind), then the mind into jñāna (intellect), intellect into the mahat ātman (the great Self, identified with Hiranyagarbha or cosmic intelligence), and finally, the mahat ātman into the śānta ātman (the peaceful, unconditioned Self that is the witness of all modifications). This process signifies the journey from the gross to the subtle, culminating in the realization of the innermost, immutable Self.
