श्रोत्रियोऽवृजिनोऽकामहतो यो ब्रह्मवित्तमः ।
ब्रह्मण्युपरतः शान्तो निरिन्धन इवानलः
अहेतुकदयासिन्धुर्बन्धुरानमतां सताम् ॥ ३३ ॥

śrotriyo'vṛjino'kāmahato yo brahmavittamaḥ ।
brahmaṇyuparataḥ śānto nirindhana ivānalaḥ
ahetukadayāsindhurbandhurānamatāṁ satām ॥ 33 ॥

Translation (अनुवाद)

He who is learned in the scriptures, free from sin, unaffected by desires, supreme knower of Brahman, detached, peaceful, like a fire without fuel, is an uncaused ocean of compassion and a friend to the sincere surrenderers.

Commentary (टीका)

This verse glorifies the attributes of a true spiritual master or a realized soul. Such a person is described as a śrotriya, one who is well-versed in the scriptures and practices what he learns, ensuring he remains avṛjina, or free from sin. The individual is also a-kāmahata, meaning unaffected by worldly desires, and achieves the status of brahmavit-tamaḥ, the ultimate knower of Brahman (the Ultimate Reality). Living in a state of upārati, detached from fleeting pleasures and pains, he remains śānto, or peaceful. The metaphor of a nirindhana (fuel-less) fire implies complete inner peace and self-sufficiency, undisturbed by external factors. Furthermore, possessing ahetuka-dayāsindhu, or uncaused, vast compassion, he becomes the bandhu, a true friend and refuge for the ānamatām satām, those virtuous souls who humbly surrender. This verse underscores the potential to attain the highest spiritual state and the qualities that accompany such realization, providing a guide for aspirants on the spiritual path.
