इस सूत्र में कहा गया है कि गंध, रस, रूप, स्पर्श और शब्द – ये पाँच गुण पृथ्वी आदि पाँच द्रव्यों में स्थित हैं। प्रत्येक द्रव्य का एक विशेष गुण होता है, जैसे पृथ्वी में गंध, जल में रस, अग्नि में रूप, वायु में स्पर्श और आकाश में शब्द। ये गुण ही द्रव्यों की पहचान और उनके कार्य का आधार हैं।
