जब प्रतिपक्ष (पक्ष) का निषेध किया जाता है, तब प्रतिज्ञा (मुख्य कथन) के अर्थ का अपहरण या त्याग कर देना ही प्रतिज्ञा-संन्यास कहलाता है। इसका तात्पर्य यह है कि यदि प्रतिपक्ष सिद्ध नहीं होता, तो प्रतिज्ञा को भी छोड़ देना चाहिए।
